Documentation Mistakes That Tank Your Insurance Claim

Documentation Mistakes That Tank Your Insurance Claim

Most homeowners file an insurance claim exactly once or twice in their lives. Insurance adjusters process claims every single day. That experience gap is where money gets lost — and it usually starts with documentation.

After working through hundreds of storm and water damage claims across McKinney, Frisco, Highland Park, and The Colony, we’ve seen the same three documentation mistakes derail legitimate claims over and over.

Top Three Common Mistakes

Mistake #1: Cleaning Up Before the Assessment

It’s instinct to start cleaning immediately after damage. Wet items get moved. Debris gets bagged. Standing water gets mopped. Every one of those actions reduces the documented evidence of how severe the damage actually was.

Do not begin cleanup until you have photos, video, and ideally a contractor walkthrough on record. Date-stamped media is your most important asset in a claim.

Mistake #2: Letting the Insurer Define the Scope Alone

When a homeowner allows an adjuster to scope a claim without an independent contractor present, they’re relying on one person’s quick assessment to define what’s covered. Adjusters aren’t trying to deceive you — but they’re operating under time pressure and using software-driven pricing that doesn’t always reflect your home’s actual repair needs.

Having a restoration contractor walk the property before or during the adjuster visit means a second set of experienced eyes on every square foot of damage. Items that get missed in a solo adjuster visit — secondary water pathways, concealed structural issues, related code requirements — are items that often fall outside the final payout.

Mistake #3: Accepting the First Estimate as Final

The initial adjuster estimate is a starting point, not a ceiling. Texas homeowners have the right to supplement a claim when additional damage is identified or when repair costs exceed the original estimate.

Claims can be supplemented even after work has begun, as long as the additional damage can be documented. The homeowners who recover the most are the ones who treat the first estimate as a draft — and have a contractor who knows how to write and submit supplements effectively.

We recently used Edward and his crew to convert our builder-grade tub into a walk-in shower and to add backsplash in the kitchen, and we couldn't be happier with the results! Edward was incredibly professional throughout the entire process. He was proactive, communicative, and kept us updated on the progress of the work. The attention to detail in both the shower and backsplash was impressive. The pricing was very competitive with other local contractors, and the quality was unmatched. The final outcome exceeded our expectations. I highly recommend Legacy Home Care for any home renovation project!

Legacy Home Care did a full renovation of our kitchen down to the studs and hardwood flooring throughout the downstairs after a dishwasher leak. The craftsmanship of each element is extremely high quality. The other amazing thing is that the project stayed on schedule. Edward was very helpful in working with our insurance company and helped us receive more on our claim than we would have on our own. As with any full renovation, there were tense moments but Edward always sought to make things right and assured we were happy down to the very small details. We would use Legacy Home Care again and recommend them to friends.

I had a great experience with Legacy Home Care. I had water intrusion that caused damage to drywall, carpet and baseboards in our primary bedroom and closet. We decided to upgrade the closets shelving during the repair. Edward really listened to what we wanted and his guys showed professionalism and extreme skill in their trades. The entire process was clearly communicated and the work areas were never left in disorder at the end of the day. I highly recommend this company.
