Why You Shouldn’t Use Your Insurance Company’s Preferred Contractor

When Storm Damage Hits–Insurance Moves Fast

Within days — sometimes hours — they’re recommending a contractor. They call them a “preferred vendor” or a “network contractor.” It sounds like a convenience. It’s usually anything but. Maybe you bought new furniture, repainted, or swapped out bedding, yet something still feels off.

Here’s what most homeowners in McKinney, Frisco, and the surrounding area don’t realize until it’s too late: preferred contractors are selected and vetted by your insurer. They work within agreed-upon pricing structures set by the insurance company. Their first loyalty isn’t to your home — it’s to keeping claim costs down.

What 'Preferred' Actually Means

Insurance companies build networks of contractors who agree to perform work at predetermined rates. In exchange, those contractors get a steady stream of referrals. It’s a business relationship — and you’re not the primary party in it.

That doesn’t make every preferred contractor dishonest. But it does create a structural conflict of interest. When your adjuster recommends someone, that someone has financial reasons to stay within the adjuster’s preferred scope — even when your home needs more.

What it Costs McKinney Homeowners

We’ve seen it play out hundreds of times across Collin County. A homeowner accepts the insurer’s referral. The contractor comes out, completes the visible repairs, and closes the job. Six months later:

  • A secondary ceiling leak appears — because the original roof damage wasn’t fully documented
  • Water intrusion causes mold behind new drywall — because the moisture assessment was rushed
  • The homeowner gets a second repair bill for $15,000–$30,000 they expected to be covered

By then, the original claim is closed. Fighting to reopen it is an uphill battle.

How to Protect Yourself

You are not required to use your insurer’s preferred contractor. In Texas, you have the right to hire any licensed contractor of your choosing. The key is doing it before the claim is scoped and closed.

Hiring a contractor who specializes in insurance claim restoration — and who handles damage documentation and stands beside you through the entire scope review — changes the outcome. They know what adjusters look for, how to document cascading damage, and how to make sure every covered repair is visible and on the table.

We recently used Edward and his crew to convert our builder-grade tub into a walk-in shower and to add backsplash in the kitchen, and we couldn't be happier with the results! Edward was incredibly professional throughout the entire process. He was proactive, communicative, and kept us updated on the progress of the work. The attention to detail in both the shower and backsplash was impressive. The pricing was very competitive with other local contractors, and the quality was unmatched. The final outcome exceeded our expectations. I highly recommend Legacy Home Care for any home renovation project!

Legacy Home Care did a full renovation of our kitchen down to the studs and hardwood flooring throughout the downstairs after a dishwasher leak. The craftsmanship of each element is extremely high quality. The other amazing thing is that the project stayed on schedule. Edward was very helpful in working with our insurance company and helped us receive more on our claim than we would have on our own. As with any full renovation, there were tense moments but Edward always sought to make things right and assured we were happy down to the very small details. We would use Legacy Home Care again and recommend them to friends.

I had a great experience with Legacy Home Care. I had water intrusion that caused damage to drywall, carpet and baseboards in our primary bedroom and closet. We decided to upgrade the closets shelving during the repair. Edward really listened to what we wanted and his guys showed professionalism and extreme skill in their trades. The entire process was clearly communicated and the work areas were never left in disorder at the end of the day. I highly recommend this company.
